EL HIJO DE TODOS, a feature-length fiction film inspired by the kidnapping and murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco at the hands of ETA and told from a perspective that has rarely been explored in cinema—that of his family—will soon begin filming at various locations in the Basque Country. The film is set in July 1997, when a family like any other saw their lives change forever. In just 48 hours, the anguish of a father, mother, and sister became that of millions of people who, both inside and outside Spain, felt Miguel Ángel Blanco’s fate as if it were their own. His kidnapping and subsequent murder sparked an unprecedented public outcry, which remains etched in the collective memory of an entire country.
EL HIJO DE TODOS recaptures the most intimate and human dimension of those events to bring them closer, especially to the generations that did not experience them firsthand. Through the eyes of his family, the film reconstructs two days marked by anguish, uncertainty, and hope, during which millions of people took to the streets to demand his release.
The title of the feature film comes from the words spoken by Consuelo Garrido, Miguel Ángel Blanco’s mother, upon learning of her son’s murder: “ETA didn’t kill my son; it killed everyone’s son.” This phrase sums up the collective sentiment that swept through Spain during those days and forms the emotional core of the film.

“This is the story of how fear was overcome. Of how, in the midst of anguish, a collective hope was born. Of how millions of people made Miguel Ángel Blanco’s fate their own—a young man whom the vast majority did not know, but for whose life they took to the streets. It is the story of a family and of the solidarity of an entire country,” says Álvaro Brechner, director of *EL HIJO DE TODOS*.
The making of EL HIJO DE TODOS involved the collaboration of Mari Mar Blanco, Miguel Ángel Blanco’s sister, whose generosity and openness allowed the creative team to gain intimate access to a family that experienced those events firsthand.
María Luisa Gutiérrez, the film’s producer and a founding partner of Bowfinger International Pictures, speaks on behalf of the producers, noting that “When I met with Mari Mar Blanco at the Senate more than a year ago, I felt afraid. And now, as we’re about to start filming, that sense of dread still lingers among the producers. Turning this story into fiction is a huge responsibility for all of us. The film is based on the kidnapping and murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco, but it also aims to represent the pain of all victims of terrorism and their families—a pain that is different in each case, yet shared by far too many people. And we also want to recall the helplessness of an entire society in the face of terror and the extraordinary unity that emerged during those days, when thousands of people took to the streets with their white hands as their only weapon.
Mari Mar’s generosity with this project has been immense. She always understood that, to convey a profound truth, cinema would often have to resort to something that, literally, is not true: fiction. From every meeting with her—screenwriters, director, actors, and producers—we have tried to capture every memory and every detail to imbue the film with truth and humanity.
We want those who did not live through those days to understand what they meant, to connect not only with the pain of one family but with that of all the families who suffered from terrorism, and to discover how that tragedy sparked a collective response that gave rise to the Spirit of Ermua. And we want those of us who did live through them to remember the strength we can have when we stand together.
Throughout this entire process, the contributions of Carmen Ladrón de Guevara, a lawyer specializing in terrorism, have been essential. Her knowledge, research, and closeness to the victims have helped us—from the script to the costumes—to approach this story with the sensitivity and respect it deserves.”
